Hey, gentlemen, pull up a seat and sit down. I’m going to tell you how feminism can very directly help you.

Suicide rates are highest amongst young men. Why? Because society has conditioned us to believe that men are too strong, too independent to need help, so when young men with mental illnesses or men who are struggling in life find themselves backed into a corner, they feel like they have nowhere else to turn. They can’t go to a doctor, because that’s weak. They can’t talk about it to their friends and family, because that’s weak too. They’re forced by the patriarchy into maintaining a false facade of strength and stoicism, and it ends up costing them their lives. Feminism wants to change that.

Men who go into traditionally “female” professions like nursing are constantly mocked, ridiculed or assumed to be gay. Why? Because why would a man willingly go into a subservient field, one that’s only good enough for women? Why would a man lower himself to a woman’s level? There are men who find a genuine calling in fields like nursing, and they face societal stigmas and mockery for their whole careers because of it. The patriarchy tells them that they’re too good for “female” professions, and it ends up opening them up to the judgement of their peers when they decide to do what they’re passionate about anyway. Feminism wants to change that, too.

Men who aren’t macho, alpha-male types are portrayed as somehow less deserving of romantic companionship. Why? Because not being macho, not being “alpha” (whatever the hell that even means) are seen as female traits, and any guy who acts like a girl is obviously not a real guy. Guys who want to express themselves emotionally and creatively, guys who want to live lives that don’t conform to the patriarchy’s expectations, guys who aren’t interested in being “real men” and just want to be true to themselves are constantly treated like they’re inferior to the muscle-bound, super-successful alpha upper-crust, just because they don’t fit society’s idea of what a man is meant to look like. Feminism is about fighting that unfair expectation, every minute of every day.

Men are often at an unfair disadvantage in custody battles. Why? Because society doesn’t think it’s a man’s place to be a nurturing, caring parent - his sole responsibility is to provide financially for his family, whilst women do the less glamorous work of caring for the kids. But plenty of guys are fantastic, caring fathers, and they’re told that this isn’t important because that’s female stuff, and female stuff isn’t important. Men lose their kids to women who might be unfit mothers because even our justice system thinks all men are emotionless and uninterested in child-rearing, and all women are by default soft and nurturing. Sometimes, this just isn’t the case. Feminism is about making society realise that not only is being a good parent not just a female thing, but that the things we think of as “female” aren’t inferior, so it’s fine if men do those things too!

Male-on-male and female-on-male sexual assault and domestic violence are virtually ignored, and often, male victims of violent crime are not only not given the support they need, but actively mocked for being victims. Why? Because while our cultural narratives support the idea that men are more powerful than women and therefore can do to them whatever they like, they see male victims as weak and somehow deserving of violence if it happens to them, because as men, they should have been able to defend themselves. There are people who think violent crime perpetrated against men is somehow comedy fodder. That’s not okay on any level. Feminism wants to change that.

Women can dress pretty androgynously and get away with it; men can’t. Why? Because while everyone can understand why women want to be more like men, nobody can understand why men might want to be more like women. This leads to us unfairly questioning the masculinity of gay men, trans men and basically all men who aren’t what the patriarchy thinks men should be. Feminism realises that that’s an unfair standard, and wants that standard to change.

If you’re a man - any man - feminism is about you too. It’s about all of us. It’s about making the world a better and safer and fairer place. Don’t be so quick to dismiss feminism because you think it can’t possibly be about you. It can be, and it is.

You aren’t legally required to use correct grammar, it’s a social pressure and expectation, not the law, and no one is holding a gun to your head. You can moralise to people on the internet about how they just don’t want to travel badly enough from the computer your parents paid for using the free internet connection at your expensive NY college, also paid for by your parents. Then you can afford to leave college if you want because as a white middle class cis person, you know it’ll never be hard for you to find a job when employers would fall over themselves to hire you rather than a gay dude, or a black man, or a trans person, or someone with a disability. You can conveniently forget that, hey, a lot of people have diseases that make it impossible for them to work even low-paying jobs to scrape together rent money, let alone money for gas or bus fares or hotel rooms or overseas flights. You can tell people to sell off their houses as though most people these days can afford to buy a house or even a vehicle, for that matter, and you can judge them for having a computer and a cell phone and internet instead of giving up those things to live the life of a nomad & non-conformist, adventurer and raconteur. You can call yourself really pretentious things like “sculptor of words” to mask the fact that what you do for a living is basically work minimum wage jobs so that you can travel and then judge other people for travelling. You can marvel at how you, a resident of a first world country, are richer than all those poor people in third world countries with devalued currencies that allow you to selectively partake in their culture as a tourist without either contributing anything meaningful to their culture in return or realising how horribly un-self aware it is to lecture the 16% of people living below the poverty line in the United States about how they should be grateful for not living below the poverty line elsewhere. So please say to me, “I’m a white girl who hasn’t yet been browbeaten into humility by life experience and probably will never be thanks to her privilege”, not, “I’m just trying to help you all realise that The Man and social obligations are stopping you from reenacting Eat Pray Love and unintentionally perpetuating colonialist power dynamics in a fantasy of worldliness that my real level of self-awareness can never match up to”, because I have yet to meet someone who thinks they’re wiser than every single person to whom they’re proselytising who is, who truly is. You can, however, only live once, and for me, the enrichment of my soul that comes from making people on the internet feel like their lifestyles are inferior and somehow inherently less meaningful than mine is worth more than the self-awareness and perspective that could bring me humility, or at least a little tact. Of course, you must choose for yourself, follow the advice of a girl on the internet who’s probably writing this in a Starbucks somewhere as she sips on a Fair Trade latte she’d judge you for drinking because you want nice drinks more than you want to enrich your soul by appropriating the cultures of third world countries the world over, but know that you can tell me to go fuck myself if you want to, you’re only making excuses for why you can’t. And if it makes any difference, I’ve never met someone who has told me to take my incredibly condescending attitude towards anyone I consider less enlightened than me and shove it and regretted it. None. Only people who have grown old and never said anything about how it’s so easy for privileged white girls to talk about life being simple if you want it to be, who have wondered about the lives they could have had if they, too, were born into immense privilege and were completely blind to it.”
